Compose key on dedicated keyboard layout. I have written U.S. Custom, a keyboard layout that implements the compose key. On Mac OS X, there are two ways of implementing the compose key: Either with can be implemented either with the Cocoa text system (as already described in Sam Hocevar's most helpful answer) or with a dedicated keyboard layout. You can also use Mac OS X shortcuts by pressing Command-Tab and then using the arrow keys to navigate to the Finder. If a Finder window was open, you go to that window. Otherwise, you go to the desktop. In that case, go to the menu bar by pressing VO-M or, if you're using VoiceOver gestures, double-tapping near the top edge of the trackpad. Mac keyboards are fairly renowned for their simple but elegant functionality. Not only are they highly customizable, but OS X contains an option that let you use the function (fn) key to access the actual function keys (F1, F2, etc.). We've made it clear that it is easy to make the most of Mac keyboards. The Mac OS X Shutdown dialog offers sleep and restart options, too. Command-Option-Eject Hold these keys down for a few seconds to put your Mac to sleep without opening a confirmation dialog. If you want to use the Alt + F4 key combination to close a window on a remote computer running the Windows Streamer, you would need to press Fn + Option + F4 on the Mac keyboard. Other keys, like Ctrl, Command (='Win key' for Windows), are the same between Mac and Windows.

The Command key is the most common modifier key in Mac OSX. Many menu items, such as Quit, Close, andSave, have a keystroke shortcut using the Command key. To usesuch a shortcut, hold down one of the Command keys and press theletter key for that item. For example, to save a document in mostapplications, hold down Commmand and presss.

Apple keyboards usually have one Command key on each side of theSpacebar. Normally the key will have a cloverleaf icon and, on older keyboards, an apple. Alsoon older keyboards, the word 'command' may not be present or may beabbreviated (e.g., 'Cmd').
